I have worked with over three hundred companies ranging in size from start-ups to $1 billion facing critical issues including industry consolidation, technology change, governmental regulations, distribution channel changes, sales and margin erosion, asset re-deployment, offshoring, re-shoring, licensing agreements and global strategic alliances. I have an excellent, long-standing working relationships with many accountants, auditors, attorneys, advisors, bankers, asset-based lenders, consultants, factors, brokers, licensors, designers, CEOs, CFOs, CIOs, COOs, CMOs, CROs, CPAs, suppliers, sales representatives, retailers, private equity groups, investors, software solution providers and extensive furniture and furnishings industry contacts.
Prior to launching The Downs Group, I was Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer for fifteen years at Taylor King Furniture, Inc. helping achieve record-high profitability levels through many aggressive actions, including the implementation of lean accounting, just-in-time financial and operations planning, performance reporting and control systems, cost reduction programs, contribution margin and product pricing improvements, product development, strategic planning, business development and an an exclusive licensing agreement, coupled with superior asset, credit and inventory management achievements.
Before Taylor King Furniture, Inc., (a former client) I formed Downs & Company, a corporate management and business consulting entity providing senior financial and operations advisory services to many major furniture and furnishings industry manufacturers, distributors, importers and suppliers, including Bassett, Baker, Century, Directional, Distinction Leather, Emerson Leather, Hickory-White, Huntington House, Jamestown Sterling, North Hickory, Sherrill, Stanley and Taylor King Furniture. Earlier, I held senior financial, administration, strategic planning and operations executive management positions with Ayers Furniture Industries, Alexvale Furniture, Inc., Hickory-Fry Furniture, Inc. and Congoleum Corporation (including Director of Planning and Operations Analysis-Home Furnishings Group, Director of Finance-Corporate Office and Division Controller for Webb Furniture, Inc. and Howard-Parlor Furniture, Inc.). Previously, I held key operational and cost management finance positions with Hammary Furniture and Stanley Furniture.
I have served multiple terms on the Finance Division Board of Directors of the American Home Furnishings Alliance and its predecessor associations. The Downs Group is a current member of the Alliance of Merger & Acquisition Advisors, American Home Furnishings Alliance, American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame Foundation, APICS-The Association of Operations Management, Association of Corporate Growth, Carolinas-Virginia Business Brokers Association, Financial Executives International, Institute of Management Accountants, International Home Furnishings Representative Association, North Carolina Real Estate Commission and Turnaround Management Association.
